Show statement for Medulla Oblongata:
The Medulla Oblongata is the swelling of the spinal cord where it attaches to the brain. It is the part of the brain commonly referred to as the “reptilian brain” – the part we share with the rest of the animal kingdom. It is the center that controls basic life functions like respiration, heart beat and sex drive. Along with these functions it is believed that it is also the source of such things as motivation and the desire to live.
All of our sensations as we perceive images, sounds, smells, touch and tastes go through this part before they are processed by our brains. It is here that the drama between our animal and our human selves is acted out on a cellular level.
What I’m displaying in this group of works are some ways to illustrate the tensions and, at times, the harmony that occurs between the selves that we construct and the universal (animal) self that exists in that apical node of our spinal cords.
