“celldivision" was a site specific installation made over the course of many days and nights in the river district of Asheville, NC
I built it in these five brick connected silos that were the remnants of a burnt down and abandoned seed and feed building. (now next to White Duck Tacos in Asheville, NC). The space was boarded up and I had to break into the space and clean out a bunch of junk to get it ready. I never ended up getting permission to make it - (thus “guerrilla art installation”)
The outer 4 silos each had a 4 foot cube in the center with an opening in the top for light and several small peep holes through which you could see a small world inside each box. The boxes were built out of wood pallets and covered in cardboard.
The middle silo had deep sonorous bell made from an oxygen tank. When rung the sound filled the space in an incredibly ethereal way bouncing off round walls interfering with itself in a myriad of ways.
Peeking into the the first box you could see a layer of river rock with a nest made out of copper wire and some wooden eggs.
Over time the installation changed somewhat. Rain and snow could get in through the openings in the roof which damaged the cardboard. Sometimes the cardboard was peeled back and eventually it all came off.
The box in the second chamber had a tray of water in it over which was suspended several sharp spikey thorns from a honey locust tree.
A few times I found “offerings” people had left in here. An animal skull, a special stone, a note.
